AGES 8 TO 11

Each session will focus on the following three themes:

QUADRUPEDAL MOVEMENT (QM) - horizontal and vertical. We will draw on numerous movement disciplines, including: parkour, capoeira, bouldering, and basic locomotion patterns. Quadrupedal movement (moving on all 4s) is essential to a well thought out movement curriculum. While it is completely natural and primal to crawl on all 4s, QM becomes increasingly unnatural as we get older. QM is essential to exploratory play and physical expression. It also encourages the body to move beyond linear patterns of movement. QM will also aid in your child’s overall strength and mobility.

STRONG AND BENDY SPINES - The ability to voluntarily go into a bridge cannot be underestimated. As the phrase goes, “You are as old as your spine.” Some of the movements your child can expect to encounter include everything from the basic back bridge to more complex acrobatic movements such as the macaco, wall spins and the back flip.

STRENGTH TRAINING - Strength, just like mobility, will provide your children with both more physical freedom as well as even greater complex play. Our strength training will focus on the basics of upper body pushing and pulling (think push ups, chin ups, rope climbs) as well as olympic weightlifting. We also stress the importance of training on everyday objects: ledges, trees, rails, etc., will all be used for your child’s strength development. Contrary to the layperson’s opinion, weightlifting is not only safe for children, it is also incredibly beneficial to building strong bones and joints. Darci Anderson, a LEVEL 2 NCCP coach, has been the Saskatchewan Junior Weightlifting coach for the past 4 years. She has taken several of her youth, junior, and senior athletes to the national level in the sport of olympic weightlifting.

PORCH PUPS and BIG DAWGS sometimes share a class time, but are in separate groups.
